How to choose a facial sunscreen: SPF 30 vs SPF 50 and formats according to your skin
SPF 30 or 50, gel, cream or stick: how to choose the sunscreen you will actually use every day.
Sunscreen is the most important step in any skincare routine, and also the most neglected. In Chile, the UV index can reach very high levels in summer, especially in the north and the central zone. Choosing your sunscreen well, one that you enjoy using, is what makes the difference.
SPF 30 or SPF 50: which one to choose?
SPF measures protection against UVB rays, which cause sunburns. An SPF 30 filters approximately 97% of UVB rays and an SPF 50 filters 98%. The difference is small, but real during prolonged exposure.
SPF 30: sufficient for daily use in the city, with correct application.
SPF 50: recommended for the beach, mountains, sports, light skin, or skin with blemishes.
Also look for the broad spectrum or PA+++ indication, which refers to protection against UVA rays, the rays associated with skin aging.
How to choose based on your skin type
Skin type
What to look for
Oily or combination
Lightweight textures: serum, gel, or fluid, with a dry finish and non-comedogenic.
Dry
Creams with moisturizing ingredients.
Sensitive
Fragrance-free formulas, preferably with mineral filters (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide).
Acne-prone
Lightweight, "oil-free," and non-comedogenic formulas.
Not sure what your skin type is? Take the AEVIA test.
How much to apply
Quantity is the most underestimated factor. For the face and neck, the rule of thumb is two fingers of product (index and middle fingers extended, loaded with sunscreen). Applying less reduces the actual protection to a fraction of the number stated on the packaging.
How often to reapply
Every 2 hours if you are exposed to direct sunlight.
After sweating, swimming, or drying off with a towel.
In your day-to-day office life, one application in the morning may be sufficient, and reapply if you go outside for a long time.
To reapply without ruining your makeup, stick formats are very practical.
Complement it with shade during peak radiation hours (between 10 AM and 4 PM), a hat, sunglasses with UV protection, and protective clothing. And if you notice moles that are changing or new spots, consult a dermatologist.
Frequently asked questions
Should you wear sunscreen if it's cloudy?
Yes. A large part of UV radiation passes through the clouds.
Can I use the same sunscreen for my body and my face?
You can, but many facial sunscreens are designed to be lighter and not clog pores. Use it in the correct amount.
Does makeup with SPF replace sunscreen?
No, because it is difficult to apply a sufficient amount. Use it as a complement.
